Hampden County, Massachusetts Inmate Search

A Hampden County inmate search is a process used to find information about a person in jail. It furnishes the person performing the search with information about an inmate’s booking, the arrested individual, and the offense that led to the arrest. The Massachusetts Public Records Law provides for inmate searches, as it obligates law enforcement officers to maintain arrest registers and make them available to members of the public upon request. Inmates in Hampden County are held at the Hampden County Correctional Center, managed by the Hampden County Sheriff.

There are no state-operated or federally operated prisons physically located within Hampden County. Hampden County residents sentenced to state prison sentences or handled by the Bureau of Prisons are transported to incarceration facilities in other counties. Each of these facilities, as well as city police departments, such as the Springfield Police Department and the Agawam Police Department, maintains an information repository for inmates held at their jails and is responsible for searches pertaining to their inmates.

How to Use the Hampden County Jail Roster

The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office does not maintain a publicly available online jail roster. Inquirers must visit the sheriff’s office in person or submit a request to the records office by mail or email for any inmate-related inquiries they may have. To use rosters provided by third-party service providers, a person should be willing to pay any fees required by a service provider and must possess the inmate’s first and last name. Online rosters usually feature fields where users must enter these details before proceeding with a search.

Some websites provide alternative search criteria like an inmate’s jail identification/booking number. The only official online resource similar to a jail roster is the VINELink portal, although this resource, which is provided by the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, only provides information for inmates under their jurisdiction. Searches on the VINeLink are either by name or an inmate’s ID number. If unknown, a researcher can contact the DOC directly for the ID number.

What Information is Included in the Hampden County Inmate Roster

While inmate information is generally assumed public, it often contains certain personal information, such as phone numbers, Social Security numbers, juvenile records, and driver’s license numbers, which is not available to the public. Therefore, such details are removed or redacted from publicly accessible records. Inmate rosters usually cover the following inmate details:

  • Full name: the inmate’s first, middle, and last name.
  • Physical characteristics: information such as gender, race, height, weight, age, and any identifying marks like tattoos, scars, or other distinguishing features.
  • Charges: the specific law or statute the inmate is accused of violating.
  • Booking details: information including the arresting or booking agency, the date and time of booking, and the assigned booking number.
  • Bond details: the bond amount and bond type.
  • Offense description: a brief explanation of the alleged offense (for example, DUI or possession of marijuana).
  • Case status: the current standing or stage of the case.
  • Docket number: the court-assigned case identification number.
